Power failures hit Aiken area Friday night as heavy storms with rain and lightning moved through. Police radio traffic indicated outages south of Pine Log Road west near 10 45 p m with totals unclear at press time.
Lakeisha M. Bratton, 25, of Columbia, is jailed on four counts of obtaining currency under false pretenses for offering her unborn child for adoption in exchange for living expenses to four couples from Vancouver, Tennessee, Georgia and South Carolina between February and July 2008. She was arrested May 25 in Aiken County, while custody documents and details point to multiple parties believing adoption would occur. The baby, born July 2005, is with a relative in Sumter according to investigators.
Heatwave effects at the Aiken County Complex prompted repairs after a failing second chiller left one unit running and temps rising. County Administrator Clay Killian noted years of prior warnings to replace the 1983 chillers while executives allowed cooling to degrade. Public Works budget requests for replacement were repeatedly cut.
The Aiken County Treasurer’s Office began issuing license plate decals Thursday as a DMV subcontractor. The pilot, first run in Dorchester County last year, expands to four counties statewide and eliminates mailing delays, saving the state money. Elizabeth Williams was among 300 residents who received decals by 2:30 p.m. on day one. A ceremony with state representatives will be held June 21 at 2 pm in the County Council Chambers to celebrate the new system.
