An intelligence official says the CIA tracked two Sept. 11 hijackers at an al Qaida meeting more than a year before the attacks but did not inform the FBI or INS. Sen. Shelby criticized the agency for massive failures and questioned George Tenet's stance on the matter. See CIA, Page 9A.
Aiken County Public Safety is probing a disturbance at the Best Western Motel. Two men have been detained for questioning along with a female juvenile in the room. A 911 call reported a third man with a gun outside the room, later found to carry only a toy gun on a keychain. Charges had not been determined at press time.
Three Columbia insiders pursue the Republican nomination to replace Lt. Gov. Bob Peeler who leaves office after eight years. Candidates Rita Allison Andre Bauer and David Thomas seek the nomination with a June 11 primary or June 25 runoff. The winner faces Phil Leventis and Kenneth Curtis in November. Allison chairs Spartanburg County Legislative Delegation and holds GOP leadership roles.
