Federal Family Leave Regulations Implement 12 Week Unpaid Leave
The Labor Department issued 94 pages of rules effective Aug. 5 to implement the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993. It covers about 40 percent of workers, requires firms with 50 or more employees within 75 miles to grant up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for family emergencies, birth, adoption, or illness, with restoration to the same or equivalent job and pay. Accrued paid leave may substitute for unpaid leave under certain conditions.
