Aiken County House members consider a bill to elect local school board members by party. Republicans Beck Mason Smith Sharpe support the move, Democrat Clyburn opposes. The bill advances to the Senate where debate over accountability and polling impact continues.
The federal government seeks bids to replace Morrison Knudsen at the Savannah River Site after 16 years and 499 million dollars. DOE halted the waste storage method due to high benzene gas risk, citing poor judgement and urging a new safe process. Undersecretary Ernest Moniz notes engineers sought fixes to the old method. A GAO report criticized concurrent design and construction. Rep. Dingell blamed DOE and Westinghouse for worsening the issue.
East Aiken Elementary celebrated finishing the Walk to Yellowstone project to raise funds for wolves in Yellowstone. Stella the 14 month old wolf and Boo Boo the 3 year old bear met students at an assembly as the 2,500 mile walking target was reached and $1,100 was raised to adopt 52 wolves. Tim Seegars brought the animals from Fort Lawn.
The council discussed road paving and dirt road repairs while considering a $65 million balanced budget. Focused talks on raising pay for low grade workers, funding for the coroner’s office and a possible $43,000 mental health grant mark the session.
Christine Allewelt and her husband Richard received the Small Business Person of the Year award from the Aiken Chamber of Commerce. The family team runs New Moon Cafe, with four years of growth, plans for a second downtown location, and active community volunteer work with groups like the American Cancer Society and Aiken Center for the Arts.
