Respected Educator Ends 29 Year Career In Aiken Schools

James A. Taylor, Raleigh native and long time Aiken educator, retires after 29 years in Aiken schools. He plans a quiet break and may pursue non education work, promising to stay active though not pursuing high earnings. Taylor's career spans teacher coach principal and mentor to many.

Houndslake Appeals Tax Appraisal Delays and Refund Suit

Houndslake Corporation paid county taxes nearly two months late while awaiting the results of an assessment appeal and faces a $2,483.22 penalty. County Attorney Robert Bell says taxes were due on time and says a refund will be pursued if the appraisal is reduced by the Aiken County Tax Review Board. The April 30 1982 notices set Houndslake at 1 652 700 with 239 6 acres valued at 1 500 per acre.

Aiken County Voters Split On Nuclear Waste Safety

A survey by two University of South Carolina students finds 41.1 percent say nuclear waste storage is safe, 40.4 percent say it is not, and 17.2 percent are unsure among 151 Aiken County respondents with a 5 percent sampling error. In Beaufort, 81.6 percent of 49 respondents said no.

State survey shows mixed views on nuclear waste transport and storage

In five South Carolina counties, Aiken residents largely disapproved of transporting waste into the state and most favored reprocessing spent fuel. Charleston Spartanburg Columbia Beaufort and others showed high opposition to storage here while opinions on funding the Barnwell plant varied. Independent student surveyors filed the project to bridge citizen and lawmaker communication.

Sparse turnout at North Augusta sewer plan public hearing

Public hearing on the North Augusta portion of the county wide sewer facilities plan drew a sparse audience. MaGuire Beebe representatives Michael N. Garrett and Lonnie T. Mathis Jr. outlined a $6.4 million project, including Phase I costing $4.8 million for interceptors a pump station and the closing of the Belvedere Terrace plant.
