Tass calls the flight an extensive program of scientific and technical research and says the cosmonauts adapted well to weightlessness. No specific firsts announced.
Israeli patrol killed two Syrian soldiers near Rafid in the occupied Golan Heights with no Israeli casualties. Damascus said Syrians carried three night forays, killing or wounding 15 Israelis and two Syrians missing. Israeli jets raided the Suez Canal and returned safely as Egypt and Israel traded blame at the UN Security Council for Monday’s schoolchild deaths and other injuries.
Huey P Newton, Black Panther co founder, asks for bail in San Francisco after the California Court of Appeal overturned his voluntary manslaughter conviction. Newton, 28, has been in custody since Oakland officer John Frey was killed with his service revolver after a car Newton drove was stopped on Oct 28, 1967. Charles Garry, defense chief, filed the bail application. state plans an appeal.
In Ann Arbor Michigan John Norman Collins 22 faces trial for the strangulation murder of 18 year old Karen Sue Beineman EMU student found nude battered and molested near Ann Arbor last July He has been in Washtenaw County jail for 10 months amid a spate of seven young women slain in the region over two years No charges yet in the other cases.
The Labor Department orders federal Washington area contractors on projects over 500000 to hire 3500 more minority workers by 1974. The plan targets 12 trades with quotas from 25 to 43 percent, excluding carpenters for good faith hiring efforts.
G H Grant chair of the Aiken County legislative delegation says no long range plans exist for the present county courthouse for eight or nine months. He notes future needs include office space a library and a museum and that a new courthouse could be ready within a year on a 10 acre East Aiken site. Architects are Hallman and Weems and bids are out for paint and repair on the old courthouse.
North Vietnamese forces overran part of a South Vietnamese artillery base at Tun Tavern on the northwest edge of South Vietnam. At least 46 South Vietnamese were killed and 84 wounded with 15 missing. 57 North Vietnamese were killed. The base, a former U S Marine outpost, faced an attack using small arms and rockets as allied forces saw heavy fighting in the Da Krong valley and Mekong Delta engagements. Three American reporters and a Cambodian driver were among those involved in the broader area incidents.

Aiken growers report a half crop this year due to a March cold snap but note improved fruit quality and size. Early Mayflower peaches near Aiken are nearly picked. Dixie Reds and later varieties expected through August. Local packing has begun as growers in Ridge and surrounding areas anticipate a late July peak.
