Lumberman saved Cypress Swamp to become Beidler Forest
Francis Beidler, a 1890s lumberman who spared trees, left a vast swamp to his heirs. The National Audubon Society and the Nature Conservancy bought 3,415 acres, creating a sanctuary now managed by Audubon. A 6,500-foot boardwalk, solar heated visitors center, and a 2 dollar admission plus 50 cent youth rate attract visitors from Aiken, with a road and parking designed to minimize environmental impact.
