In the Democratic runoff, Charleston broker Charles D Ravenel defeats veteran congressman W J Bryan Dorn to win the party nomination for governor. Dorn carried Aiken County with 7 616 votes to Ravenel’s 3 111 though Ravenel led statewide in urban areas. The lieutenant governor race pitted Harvey against Smith with Harvey winning the nomination. the general election faces Edwards Campbell and Cole. Paper ballots were used, marking a return to courthouse counting amid a new reapportionment plan.
Charles Pug Ravenel, a Charleston sheetmetal worker’s son who built a varied life path including athletics, Harvard admission, and four part time jobs, defeats veteran Congressman W J Dorn to win the state nomination. He swept Columbia Charleston and Greenville while doing well in rural areas. The outcome reflects a shift from tradition to change in the party race.
In Columbia AP reports Rep W Brantley Harvey of Beaufort won the Democratic runoff with over 54 percent, defeating Sen Horace C Smith of Spartanburg. Smith pledges support. Campbell is Republican nominee and Don R Cole runs as Independent. Harvey carried 36 of 46 counties in unofficial returns.
In South Carolina Bryan Dorn failed to secure the Democratic nomination for governor as rival Ravenel used a broad campaign, strong TV and extensive on the ground outreach. Ravenel led with 54 percent to Dorn’s 45 percent across 162 of 1632 precincts, signaling a shift to a younger, urban coalition and a future-focused message. Ravenel, a former Wall Street financier turned Charleston investor, will face James B. Fards and Peggy Jennings in November.
