In Port au Prince Haiti Roger Lafontant a Duvalierist leader was found guilty of leading an attempted coup and sentenced to life in hard labor after a one day trial. Twelve co defendants were found guilty with four getting 10 years hard labor and the rest receiving life imprisonment.
The Employment Cost Index shows American wages, salaries and benefits up 4.6 percent for the year ending in June. Benefits rose 6.0 percent while wages and salaries advanced 4.0 percent, reflecting a slower wage pace offsetting higher health care premiums.
