Coal ash removal reduces riverfront pollution in South Carolina
More than 1 million tons of coal ash have been removed from riverfront sites at Columbia area and Myrtle Beach plants under settlement deals with conservation groups. SC Electric & Gas removed about 725 000 tons from Wateree Plant lagoons and Santee Cooper about 300 000 tons from Grainger Plant lagoons. Workers move ash to lined storage or recycle into concrete to prevent river pollution and erosion risks to seawalls. Environmental groups plan likely appeals to circuit court.
