Aiken County police are investigating a shooting in the Burnettown Warrenville area. Responders found a male victim with a gunshot wound to the leg at the 100 block of Cathy Drive around 5 p.m. Police had limited details and no suspect as of Wednesday afternoon.
The Aiken Department of Public Safety Special Response Team conducted a 9 am to noon tactical drill at Millbrook Elementary on a Wednesday. Lt. Craig Burgess noted the exercise sharpened skills for potential worst‑case scenarios, with 14 members training monthly and summer sessions with the School District to map layouts and upgrade tactics. Dr. Tim Yarborough said the group trains two to three times each summer, building readiness for multi agency operations like the June active shooter drill at Aiken Middle School.
Filing for the District 1 School Board seat opens Aug 4 at noon and runs to noon Aug 1. The Oct 24 special election also covers the County Council Chair race on the same ballot. Candidates must submit petitions with 50 valid District 1 signatures at the Aiken County Registration and Elections office. The district includes Wagener Salley Ridge Spring and Monetta. Ronnie West resigned the District 1 seat effective July 18 after serving since 2016.
