Heat Wave Relents in Northeast as Storms Rise

A cold front eases 90 degree heat in the Northeast while the South and Midwest endure a second week of high temperatures. At least 12 deaths across five states are blamed on the heat. Strong storms lash areas from Cincinnati to northern New Jersey, destroying roofs, toppling trees and power lines, and capsizing boats in the Atlantic. New York City’s 10 day heat streak ends as temperatures fall and then rebound during a Sunday storm.

Baldrige Death Reverberates Through Trade Talks

The sudden death of Commerce Secretary Malcolm Baldrige disrupts Reagan administration trade negotiations with Congress. Deputy Clarence Brown is likely to be named acting secretary but unlikely to be permanent. Bruce Smart and Clayton Yeutter are discussed as potential successors, yet Brown's seniority and protocol complicate moves. Baldrige’s hard line on opening markets and enforcing safeguards shaped U.S. policy and congressional reception.
