Dying Breed Of Horses Rescued By Enthusiasts
Diane Whitney, wife of Sacramento developer John F. Whitney, trains Appaloosas seven days a week and helped California lead the breed in 1971. Once near extinction with 339 left in 1946, enthusiasts have boosted numbers to about 140,000 in the United States, making Appaloosas the third largest breed. California hosts a 120 day racing circuit starting in Vallejo and reaching Fresno in October, with races in multiple western states and beyond. Whitney competes with Don Collins of Lodi who trains 26 Appaloosas for clients like Burt Reynolds and Kenny Rogers.
