An impatient crowd of thousands crowded the Beijing ticket offices as the first batch of 250 000 Olympic tickets went on sale. Police deployed barricades and surged to control stampedes while crowds endured 93 degree heat and 94 percent humidity. Two dozen windows opened as chaotic lines formed, with injuries reported and some fans receiving water from authorities.
