Execution Date Set For Man On Death Row For 16 Years
Sylvester Adams, a Rock Hill man on death row for 16 years, has an Aug. 18 execution date set in South Carolina. The state Supreme Court cleared the way barring a US Supreme Court delay after the high court refused to hear Adams' appeal. Adams, 39, was sentenced for the 1979 kidnapping, robbery, and strangling of 16 year old Bryan Chambers. Attorney General Charlie Condon called the decision a move to speed up executions, while attorney John Blume said a clemency request may be sought due to Adams's claimed mental retardation.
