Samuel Lester Robinson 36 of McCrea's Trailer Park Gloverville waived extradition on a murder charge. He fought return from Florida after being arrested in Edgewater in early July. Floyd died from head injuries at P J s Lounge Gloverville after a pool stick assault.
Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in North Augusta reports pledges exceed two thirds of its $500,000 goal. Since July 10 the fund drive has raised $340,190 with an average pledge of $1,366 from each contacted family or individual.
City manager Roland Windham states 26 applicants seek the Aiken Recreation Department director post. The deadline passed yesterday and top candidates will be interviewed in August with a September decision planned after former director John Green resigned June 22. Terry Rhinehart serves as acting director.
A sign language course starts tonight at the H.O. Weeks Center on Whiskey Road. Instructor Lillie Darden, a certified teacher for the hearing impaired, leads eight weekly Tuesday sessions. A 10 hour Laubach Summer Tutor Workshop for teaching non reading adults to read will be held Wednesday August 3 and Thursday August 4 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Aiken Baptist Association Building on U S 1 across from Midland Valley Country Club. Participants should bring bag lunches. Volunteers completing the workshop will be certified and assigned a student. Pre registration is advised by calling the Adult Reading Campaign at 593 9258 during the day or 278 1620 in the evening.
The Aiken County Council will convene at 7 p.m. to discuss funding the 1982 property taxes from the Belvedere Water and Sewer District. Meeting is in the conference room of the complex at 736 Richland Ave.
University of South Carolina officials announced a discount under the 1983 84 fees package. Certified teachers will pay 50 per credit hour for graduate courses while the regular rate is 60 per hour. President James B Holderman said the discount aids teachers finances and their need to take graduate courses to stay certified.
