The Associated Press reports South and North Carolina tobacco markets opened with a record average of 80.68 per cwt for flue cured leaf. Across 19 markets the average was 6.32 higher than last year, with total sales at 9.65 million pounds generating about 7.79 million dollars. Top price reached 87 for fair cutters C4's.

HEW probes Tuskegee syphilis study over withheld treatment
The Department of Health, Education and Welfare ordered a full investigation into the Tuskegee syphilis study begun in 1932 in which Alabama black men died while lacking proper treatment. HEW Secretary’s aide cited remorse over the slow move to penicillin and questioned why the study continued after an effective cure appeared. Initially 600 men were cited as part of the study, but CDC later revised the figures, stating none of the 400 syphilis patients received treatment.
