Swallow-tailed kites draw birders to South Carolina roosts
In late February to early March swallow-tailed kites arrive along river bottoms in South Carolina. They nest solitarily, then form communal roosts after fledging. The Barton Road and Revolutionary Trail area is popular. Local observers describe diet of insects especially dragonflies and flying beetles, plus frogs and snakes. Matthew Price and others observe with cameras while photographers from the Carolinas Nature Photographers Association note the birds’ speed and rarity.
