Hodges warns drought will worsen water use curbs spread

Governor Hodges said extreme drought grips much of South Carolina as 39 of 46 counties including Aiken gain authority to restrict water use. He urged residents to conserve water while officials from neighboring states discuss allocations ahead of Thursday meetings.

Aiken County is among 39 South Carolina counties labeled in extreme drought, enabling local governments to restrict water use. Breezy Hill Water District reports notices printed since May but not mailed. North Augusta officials see no near term restrictions, citing Savannah River water as stabilizing.

Lawmaker vows fight over hotel loan near Hunter's Glen

South Carolina lawmaker Rep. Charles Sharpe opposes a $4.985 million USDA Rural Development loan guarantee for a 100 room hotel and 12,000 square foot conference center on Whiskey Road near Bansi Patel. Mixed turnout in Tuesday Aiken primary election

Aiken County turnout varied with Breezy Hill Fox Creek and Graniteville precincts showing higher Tuesday participation than in June statewide races. The special election cost state taxpayers about 12000. total ballots 3576 at 3.36 per vote.

Italian Aiken girl partners in friendship program

Veronica Derico of Aiken hosted by Claudia Ocera of Orvieto Italy last year through the Partners in Friendship exchange. Claudia will visit Aiken to stay with Veronica until Aug 6 as the Italian students tour USC Aiken days after arriving in America. The program alternates hosting between Aiken and Orvieto each year.

Sellers To Stay In Post In Aixen County

Howard Sellers expressed enthusiasm and optimism about the future after it was announced Wednesday that he would remain in the area. He had been in contention to be President Bushs choice for US marshal of South Carolina, but it was announced that former Greenville County Sheriff Johnny Mack Brown would take the post.
