Sheriff cites Metro Drug Squad hampering major narcotics effort

Sheriff Carrol G. Heath told Aiken County Council's Judicial and Public Safety Committee on Tuesday that a Metro Drug Squad based in the 2nd Judicial Circuit is hindering efforts to catch major narcotics operators. He seeks $35,000 to fund two additional narcotics officers, saying the department has fallen two positions short due to grant losses. Heath says the Metro squad focuses on small time dealers while major operators escape scrutiny, a view echoed by sheriffs in Barnwell and Bamberg counties. Solicitor Barbara Morgan says the squad was agreed to by all agencies in the circuit except the sheriff, who calls for better cooperation to fight the drug war. Council members avoided comment on the issue but expressed concern over rising drug problems and discussed removing drug profits as a solution.
