Gala opens yearlong 50th anniversary of moon landing

CAPE CANAVERAL Fla Former NASA astronaut Buzz Aldrin skipped a gala launching a yearlong observance of Apollo 11’s 50th anniversary though his ShareSpace Foundation sponsors the event. Aldrin cites objections over the foundation’s aims and ongoing legal matters amid a court battle with family over alleged dementia and financial disputes. The Saturn rocket themed gala at Kennedy Space Center featured astronauts, awards, and a Space memorabilia auction. Richard Branson appeared via video praising Apollo’s influence on Virgin Galactic and related ventures. The program honored Dr Carolyn Williams and Gerry Griffin while discussions by veteran astronauts stressed future Moon and Mars exploration. Tickets ranged from 7500 to 2500 per person.
