Testimony Opens in Trial Over Deadly Hotel Fire
Preston Haas, 37, stands trial on a federal arson charge after prosecutors say he used packing crates and Styrofoam to start a January 25, 2004, fire on the hotel’s third floor killing Melba Canty and her 15 month old son Jaden. Canty’s boyfriend Zachary Cromer and 46 guests escaped in freezing rain as others were injured. Prosecutors say Haas, obsessed with Canty, confessed only to gain attention.
