City works to restore Aiken’s tunnel of live oaks
The City of Aiken is restoring the South Boundary Avenue oak corridor once famed as a tree tunnel. City Manager Roger LeDuc notes the program began over a decade ago after severe loss of oaks from the 1989 to 1990 period. By 1994 about 64 trees had been planted to replace those lost, with 10 year old trees now 25 to 30 feet tall. The project aims to recreate the historic corridor from Laurens Street to East Boundary Avenue, though challenges remain in sustaining the young oaks and integrating them with Dibble’s original plantings.
