Giddings tops in primary spending in Aiken County races

Campaign disclosures show Susan Giddings spent 19,445.06 in district 2 with a runoff looming while Gregg Gregory and Jim Bland trailed. In District 5 Napier spent 1,275.75 to beat Baggott who spent 5,228.30. Charles R. Sharpe led House District 86 spending at 12,199.28.

Burning precautions urged for outdoor fires in Aiken County

Aiken County fire officials urge caution with outdoor burning. Anyone burning outdoors must contact the Forestry Commission before burning and have a firebreak around the area. Stay with the fire until it is completely safe and report any suspected wild fires to 911 or the Forestry Commission Dispatch Center. Yard burning reports call 1-800-995-7057.

Forest Fire Rages Near Belvedere Threatens Homes

A brush fire near Belvedere and Belvedere Clear Water Road burned about 50 acres and forced evacuation of four homes on Blanchard Road. Fire officials from multiple departments battled the blaze from 2:30 pm to after 5 pm as winds fanned flames toward residences.

Decision time near for store owners

South Carolina businesses face a week to choose between removing video gambling machines or halting alcohol sales. The Revenue Department will not refund poker machine licenses, with thousands of beer and wine licensees paying 4000 dollars per machine. Mike Fletcher, president of the Piedmont Coin Operators Association, questions the deadline and enforcement of a 1942 prohibition on gambling in alcohol outlets.

South Carolina video poker refunds denied to license holders

The department will not issue license refunds as operators can relocate video poker machines. About half of the states beer and wine licensees reportedly hold such machines. Refunds for $400 alcohol permits are only possible if the business closes. Daly Ward of the South Carolina Association of Convenience Stores criticizes the policy.

Salkehatchie youths repair homes in Aiken County

Sixty two South Carolina youths participate in the Salkehatchie Summer Service Project sponsored by United Methodist churches. The camp network includes 26 camps with over 1,800 participants statewide, teaching poverty awareness and teamwork as they repair five homes in Aiken County under adult leadership.
