Extra hurricane cables added to Ravenel Bridge project
Additional tie down cables have been installed on the Ravenel Bridge during construction to withstand winds up to 70 mph with higher gusts and protect the span as hurricane season peaks. Engineer Bobby Clair warns of potential tower cracking if a serious hurricane hits, with removal planned after main span connection next winter and full opening hoped for next summer. The bridge, costing 632 million, aims to replace two aging routes between Charleston and Mount Pleasant and endure extreme winds, referencing Hurricane Hugo’s 1989 damage.
