Akashi Fireworks Crush Kills 10 on Bridge
A crowd surge after a fireworks festival in Akashi Hyogo Prefecture left ten dead and about ninety injured on a pedestrian overpass to a railway station. Most victims were children as officials described people being unable to stand and suffocating on the packed bridge. Authorities cordoned off the overpass and investigated the scene while the mayor apologized for the tragedy.
