Grace Yonce Mills 58 died Friday morning July 20 2007 at home. Funeral services will be Sunday July 22 2007 at 3 PM at Hatcher Funeral Home Langley SC with the family receiving friends Saturday July 21 2007 from 7 to 9 PM at Hatcher Langley SC.
Walter F Coon 85 of North Augusta South Carolina died July 19 2007. He served in the US Navy during World War II and Korea and worked 25 years at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Gov. Mark Sanford moved programs that collect unemployment and labor data from the Employment Security Commission to his Cabinet. The executive order reassigns functions of Labor Market Information and the trade adjustment assistance program, while preserving jobless data collection. Spokesman Joel Sawyer said the change was announced Friday morning and officials are unsure how it will affect staff and ongoing operations.
State data show the June unemployment rate at 5.5 percent up from 5.4 percent in May. Education, professional services, and construction losses contributed to the rise, with Marlboro County at 11.8 percent and Horry Lexington counties at 4.1 percent the lowest. National rate held at 4.5 percent.
Clarendon County deputy investigator Todd Avant pleaded guilty to possessing video gambling machines in Manning South Carolina. He was fined 500 dollars and given 45 days to pay. Avant claimed the machines were in his Party World store and that employees conducted payouts. Sheriff Keith Josey defended him saying the matter may trigger internal discipline.
Jeffrey Vincent Alfinito, a 38 year old father, pleaded guilty to homicide by child abuse in the March 2006 death of his 6 week old son, Jef frey McCoy Alfinito. He drank six beers after work and smoked marijuana, then fell asleep on a sofa as the baby rolled off and touched a kerosene heater. The judge noted the child’s brain injury and expressed harsh judgment before sentencing.
