Lights, erosion blamed for sea turtle hatchling deaths at Folly Beach
About 150 loggerhead hatchlings on Folly Beach are believed dead after erosion and coastal lights, prompting renewed calls to enforce a May to October beachfront lighting rule. Folly Beach Turtle Watch Coordinator Carole Bennett cites nests marked with orange tape and notes recent renourishment altered sand slope and light reflections, increasing hatchling disorientation and mortality. Local safety officers will strictly enforce the lighting ordinance to protect remaining nests and hatchlings.
