John Kevin Hill and his flight instructor flew from Los Angeles to Washington DC claiming Hill as the youngest to complete the trip.
The Treasury Department launches a vendor express program to pay 200,000 businesses by electronic transfer, ending check payments. HUD, Education, and Health Care Financing Administration switch first with no initial problems. The move aims to save about $18 million annually by eliminating paper checks.

Three Washington DC men are in the Aiken County Detention Center after a late night and early morning spree of armed robberies. A clerk was robbed at the One Stop on U.S. 278 near New Ellenton and a customer was knocked down. A second robbery at a Gulf station on U.S. 1 near North Augusta followed before a Depot store robbery led to a car stop on Martintown Road. Police recovered one weapon and cash.
Rear Adm. John Poindexter testified that he was never offered a presidential pardon. The White House had said immunity was discussed to obtain testimony, but Poindexter claimed no pardon talks and no personal discussions. The White House and Meese denied a pardon discussion while immunity was pursued.
Aiken County officials and area leaders traveled to Washington to urge DOE support for a new weapons materials production reactor at SRP. They delivered resolutions from 47 local governments, signaling strong regional backing while DOE considers site options and timelines. Rep. Derrick and Sen. Thurmond attended the meeting.
In Washington the U S Postal Service and the two largest unions cut wage increase requests from 6.8 to 4.5 percent for three years as talks continue at a Washington hotel. Both sides declined to call formal talks off and warned against a strike, noting legal constraints and past actions.
The Aiken County Council meets at the County Council Building 736 Richland Ave W to discuss the 1987-88 budget and a possible 7.3 mill tax increase. A work session begins at 6 p.m. followed by the 7 p.m. meeting after a June 30 continuing budget resolution.
