Abbie Hoffman and wife Anita become parents to their first child, a boy named america with a small a. Mt Sinai Hospital reports delivery at 3 37 p m Tuesday by natural childbirth. Spokesman says the name was chosen to suit either a boy or a girl.
Atlanta AP reports novelist Joe David Brown is in fair condition at DeKalb General Hospital after admission last week for internal hemorrhaging. Brown authored Addie Pray Kings Go Forth and Stars in My Crown and previously served as a Time magazine contributing editor.
Cartoonist Al Capp will surrender voluntarily to Wisconsin authorities to face charges of sodomy attempted adultery and indecent exposure filed in Eau Claire. No surrender date set. Capp, whose legal name is Alfred Gerald Kaplin, denied the charges and had been released on personal recognizance after a Boston hearing.
Washington AP reports growing strain between President Nixon and Rep. Wilbur Mills as Mills faces pressure from colleagues to be a contender for the Democratic presidential nomination. Mills no longer dismisses talk of his candidacy and remains a political focal point amid top-priority legislation.
AP reports Postal Union leaders signed their first agreement with the new U S Postal Service a $1 billion contract that includes more than 1700 in pay increases for the average employee over two years. Meanwhile United Steelworkers ordered locals to hold strike authorization votes with Local 2633 Johnstown Pa approving a walkout as the union warns it will not extend the current contract beyond 12:01 a m August 1 expiration.
Francis Gary Powers, the U2 pilot shot down over the Soviet Union in 1960, begins a new role with KGIL in Los Angeles. He will fly a Cessna over the freeway network as a vacation replacement, delivering live traffic reports.
