Economy Ends Year With $100 Million Surplus In South Carolina

The South Carolina Board of Economic Advisors expects the 2005-06 fiscal year to close with about $100 million more in state coffers than two months earlier, adding to a prior $80 million surplus. Chair John Rainey calls the revision a windfall and notes funds will back a new reserve for buses, infrastructure, and disasters. The fiscal year ends June 30, with July sales tax receipts still to come.

New law seeks to curb teen smoking in South Carolina

A new South Carolina law, taking effect Aug 21, targets minors with tobacco. Offenders under 18 face a $25 fine, an anti smoking program, or five hours of community service, with potential driving privileges restrictions for noncompliance. The measure does not criminalize possession and aims to prevent youth tobacco use.
