Sioux City Iowa United Airlines Flight 232 with 298 aboard crashed during an emergency landing after parts of the plane tore off. At least 176 survived with many walking from the fiery wreck. City officials cited 74 dead and 43 missing. 183 hospitalized, seven fatalities among them. Rescue crews recovered the flight recorder as the search continued. The jet experienced complete hydraulic failure en route from Denver to Philadelphia via Chicago.
