Washington reports the economy fell for a second straight quarter as the Commerce Department notes a 1.2 percent drop in real output though GDP rose to an annual rate of 1.38 trillion. Analysts warn two consecutive quarterly declines may define a recession.
At the United Nations Security Council Cyprus moves to have a new government envoy present as the council plans to hear depos ed President Makarios. Council President Javier Perez de Cuellar indicated Makarios would speak as president of Cyprus while Soviet and allied members show little endorsement of the Greek-led force. A morning session was convened to discuss Nicosia’s request.
More than 740000 Bell Telephone System workers begin mail balloting to decide on a strike as talks continue in the National Airlines dispute and copper negotiations pause. About 20000 GM workers are on strike or laid off amid walkouts at plants in Lords town Ohio St Louis.
The House defeated two strip mining measures, 255 to 156 on mild standards and 336 to 69 on a full phase out. Lawmakers then shifted toward a compromise and debated substituting a plan for national environmental standards in surface coal mining.
Vice President Gerald R Ford announced at a Grand Rapids news conference that he now plans to listen to the Watergate tapes. He previously said it would be inappropriate for him to listen as a potential successor, but he cited controversy over conflicting transcripts and said he remains convinced Nixon is not impeachable.

The Country School plans a private high school facility in Aiken for grades nine through twelve with 60 students enrolled for 1974-75. Board members include Dr. James L. Bland Carl Littlejohn Sen Michael Laughlin Mrs. Robert Penland and Ronald Royal. Tuition is 105 dollars monthly and the program will include agriculture and animal husbandry with multi age group classes and team teaching.
Democratic gubernatorial runoff debates may be arranged today as Dorn and Ravenel prepare for July 30. Dorn’s camp said staffs would meet within 24 hours to set formats while Ravenel led narrowly after the first primary. The Democratic Executive Committee certified Horace Smith and W Brantley Harvey for the lieutenant governor runoff while Alex Sanders dismissed plans to protest further counts.
Recount of Tuesday's primary left Brelsford at 2 378 votes and Kirby at 2 294 with Blevins at 2 198. Brelsford advances to a July 30 runoff against Kirby. Davis holds district three nomination after edging Prosser by 10 votes 3 294 to 3 284. Davis will face Murphy or Price in the general election.

An extension to file a writ of habeas corpus was granted in Portland Oregon for two California brothers James Calvin Morrison and David Doyle Morrison charged with South Carolina murders of three soldiers. The new court appearance is Monday at 10 30 a m in the Multnomah County Courthouse.
The Labor Department reports a 1 percent rise in the consumer price index for June driven by higher costs for new and used cars medical care mortgage interest and durable goods. Nonfood items and services also show sharp increases as inflation accelerates.
