State officials accept free travel worth thousands
Statewide officeholders and 27 members of the General Assembly accepted thousands of dollars in free travel last year. Gov. Mark Sanford disclosed more than $6,000 in free travel in 2004 to events in Seattle and New Orleans. Other officials listed included Attorney General Henry McMaster and Education Superintendent Inez Tenenbaum with smaller totals. The trips, largely nonofficial, were legal under ethics law and disclosed on annual economic interests forms. Critics say such gifts create ethical concerns and potential expectations of favors. In total, 27 lawmakers took over $42,000 in hotel rooms, airfare and meals.
