Coroner Sue Townsend reports 250 deaths in the year ending June 30, down from 251 the prior year. She notes many fatalities linked to alcohol or drugs, with 58 accidents including 37 related to substances and 6 of 8 murders connected to similar causes, underscoring a public health focus.
A Census Bureau study finds women leave work longer than men with over 60 percent of working women taking six months off versus far fewer men. Most women cited home or family care. earnings averages show women at $4.38 and men at $6.92 per hour, with gaps narrowing only slightly under equal experience assumptions.
Three children who were sexually abused will testify by videotape in the trial of three Horry County residents charged with the crimes. Circuit Judge Paul Moore approved the testifying method under the Victims and Witnesses Bill of Rights, marking a first for South Carolina courts.

About 60 people appeared before the Zoning Board of Adjustments to urge removal of satellite dishes from front yards of two residents. The owners sought variances from a city ordinance after installing antennas before it defined them as structures. Larry Lowe cited $3,700 spent and hardship to move the dish. Pete Frommer explained front yard restrictions and lack of permit rules when antennas were installed.
Aiken County Board of Education will interview Suzy Smith and Margaret Jones for the Area 1 seat to replace Dr. Durward Pridgen who resigned June 12. Interviews set for August 7 may occur in executive session under policy for elected officials. The calendar was amended to add a parent conference day November 5 with a 1 p.m. start for teachers to meet parents.
Local property owners will pay lower school taxes for the coming year due to Education Improvement Act funds. The millage will be 105.3, about 5.5 percent higher on a $50,000 home and $421.20 on a $100,000 home, with $904,220.50 of new state aid directed to debt service to reduce the increase.
