Congress Backing Carter on B1 Bomber Cut

The Senate is set to back President Carter by removing all funding for the B1 bomber from a $111.4 billion defense bill this week while the House debates an agriculture measure and sides with Carter on allowing citizens to register and vote the same day. Carter halted B1 production two weeks ago, opting to modify B52s with new cruise missiles instead of pursuing the costly B1.

American Soldiers Returned From Korean Flight

Three American service members killed when their helicopter was shot down in North Korea were flown from South Korea to Japan aboard a C130 transport. Three Firefighters Die as West Fires Rage

Fires burned out of control in Utah Ashley National Forest killing three firefighters when winds shifted and trapped them. About 280 ground crews with bulldozers five helicopters and five bombers fought multiple blazes across Montana Wyoming and Utah threatening drought areas. The Boise Interagency Center planned to send 20 firefighters into Jackson Hole Wyoming near the Idaho border to combat fires burning on Timber Canyon Hanna and Horse Ridge.

Heat Wave Caused by Persistent High Pressure Across Regions

A persistent high pressure system blamed for a continuing heat wave from the Atlantic to southern Texas. Cool air over the northern plains contrasts with stagnant air in the east and midwest. Congressman Butler Derrick voiced disappointment over reports that President Carter would not veto the Richard Russell Dam as part of a public works bill. Langley Fire Damages Three Shops in Mall Center

A late night fire swept through three stores in Langley Shopping Center, damaging Widener's Department Store Kirkland's Insurance office and Wagner's Hair Carrousel. Firefighters from multiple departments contained the blaze by dawn with two injured including a helper named Jack Scott. Low water pressure hampered suppression, a problem blamed for a January 25 fire in the same center.
