South Carolina's Last Duel at Dubose Bridge in 1860
The July 5 1860 duel at Dubose's bridge near Bishopville involved Colonels Shannon and Cash with about a hundred spectators. Shannon fired first and hit no one, Cash fired second, and Cash killed Shannon. The event, linked to the era's Code Duello, drew vast outrage, investigations, and legal actions, including arrests and trials amid anti dueling campaigns.
