Tina Nordeen, vice president of the country club swim team, says members have not heard updates as the club shuts down. About 50 families paid 3350 for summer pool access, with no contact or parking access provided and a $950 pool-related note discussed, per Saturday comments.
Aiken County Registration and Elections staff braced for petitions for the County Treasurer and Auditor seats but no filings were received by the noon deadline. The treasurer race remains open as no candidate submitted a petition, with details continuing on Page 8A.
Aiken residents Tad Barber Wes Funderberg and Bruce Wheelon filed for the open Aiken County Board of Education seat in District 8. They join two incumbents Richard Hazen and Keith Liner who have no opposition. All candidates ran by petition with at least 50 signatures. candidacy verification was not yet completed.
Art Gregory a former Aiken High and Duke football standout left Duke a 3.25 million bequest for academic scholarships and football support. Of this, 3 million goes to a South Carolina resident scholarship fund. the rest funds football and other Duke programs. Gregory died July 31 2011 after a Navy career and a law degree from the University of South Carolina. His brother John Gregory notes Art’s limited discretionary spending in high school and the chance Duke gave him to play major college football.
