Thurmond health slows backers worry on GOP convention
Health problems have slowed Senator Strom Thurmond's travel and cast doubt on his attendance at the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia July 30 to Aug 3. The 97-year-old, longest serving senator, might forego the event, the first national convention he has skipped since 1964. He recently missed Palmetto Boys State and last visited South Carolina in March amid back pain, with staff noting age may be catching up.
