Officials report a protest over the bidding process for a transportation contract tied to the Councils on Aging. The dispute centers on bid procedures, with community advocates urging a transparent review and possible rebid.
Bruce McGhee and crew labor in heat to finish stabilizing the Aiken Mile Track stables by August 14. The McGhees relocated with their children to the track, restoring the historic training ground after purchasing it from the city following years of negotiation and controversy.
McGhee and his wife plan to preserve the Banks Mill Road training facility by replacing aging wooden stables with 250 new stalls. Materials from Lodden Co in Great Britain will be used, including heavy South African babou wood. A Kentucky pickup delivered 35,000 pounds of unassembled stall forms, unloaded by hand in five hours.
MOSCOW embattled Mir loses power across key systems when a crew cable disconnection cripples electricity orientation and communications. The three aboard remain safe and plan to restore power while using the Soyuz for emergency needs as thrusters stabilize the station.
Space shuttle Columbia and its seven crew members landed at Kennedy Space Center after a 16 day 6.2 million mile flight returning with a trove of research on fire metals and plants.
