The City of Aiken aims for full Y2K compliance by October after forming a special task force last March. The team includes representatives from all departments operating critical services like water, sewer, traffic signals, police and fire.
University of South Carolina engineering dean Craig A. Rogers steps down from administrative duties while under indictment on five counts of embezzlement and three counts of obtaining money by false pretenses for actions at Virginia Tech. He will stay in the department and books will be audited. associate dean Joseph Gibbons becomes acting dean.
The administration plans to let private contract employees seek federal compensation for diseases tied to beryllium exposure at nuclear weapon facilities. A medical panel would verify illnesses. Energy Secretary Bill Richardson calls this a reversal of denial and says safety standards have evolved since the 1940s.
AQHA president Ken Smith announced Ride 99 to be held September 11 in Hitchcock Woods. The event, hosted by AQHA affiliate members, is sponsored by Sierra GMC Purina Mills and Sooner Trailers with AQHA's 306000 members and 155 directors worldwide. Smith recalled returning from Special Olympics in Alamance NC where AQHA provided over 130 horses.
Aiken resident Craig Roberts, 20, was charged with strong armed robbery and assault after an incident at Matthews Corner liquor store. He allegedly grabbed two bottles, concealed them, and struck employee Ronald Marchant in the head with a bottle, sending Marchant to Aiken Regional Medical Centers for stitches. Police seek a companion who accompanied him.
