USC Aiken hosts a three year contract signing with a six team independent league to place a professional baseball club in Aiken starting May 1 2007 at Roberto Hernandez Stadium. The $30 000 per year per team deal includes a 100 game schedule with 50 home games. Local officials and university leaders tout the move as family entertainment and a continuation of USC Aikens baseball tradition.
Former Aiken County councilman William R. Ferrara, 47, was arrested Thursday on charges of fondling a 23 year old woman and seeking sex in exchange for rent. He had awaited trial on a 2005 allegation of fondling a 13 year old girl.
A 17 year old man Nolan Kerry Grant of Evans Road faces two counts of cruelty to animals second degree burglary and grand larceny for a break in at Lyon Drive Nov 9 in which two dogs Sophie and Dexter were placed in a hot oven. One dog died while the other survived after hours in hiding. Victims Chad and Chrissa Matthews reported the incident and said both dogs were not vicious. Grant was arrested Nov 12 2008 and is to be prosecuted by Assistant Solicitor Beth Ann Youne.
A three vehicle crash at Park Avenue and Laurens Street in downtown Aiken occurred about 9 a.m. causing an hour of traffic disruption. Deputy Jason Feemster unmarked 2005 Ford SUV, Raley 2005 Ford SUV, and Jena Chambers 2004 Ford minivan were involved. Raley transported to Aiken Regional Medical Centers. no life threatening injuries reported.
