The National Transportation Safety Board reports 2002 had 34 commercial airline accidents, with no deaths and nine serious injuries. The only major accident was July 26 when a FedEx cargo plane crashed at Tallahassee, all crew survived. An Aug 28 American West passenger plane ran off a Phoenix runway, injuring ten, one seriously.

Salma Hayek passes on directing The Maldonado Miracle

Actress Salma Hayek initially declined directing the Showtime movie The Maldonado Miracle, later pursuing Frida and other scripts before finding a project she felt passionate about. The film, her directorial debut, stars Ruben Blades Peter Fonda Marc Winningham and airs Oct 12. He produced it.

Dogs find new home after desert rescue from Jordan Iraq border

Five Iraqi dogs travel 9,300 miles to California aboard an Air France plane thanks to Marcy Christmas of Camarillo who funded the transport. The rescue began after she saw a TV report and coordinated with Jordan's Humane Center for Animal Welfare. Six puppies and their mother were located. two were adopted in Iraq. Christmas paid about 1,000 for the remaining pups to reach California.
