Aiken Seismic Rates Downplay East Coast Quakes
Geologist Chris Romanek from the SRS ecology lab says earthquakes in Aiken are rare and minor due to fall-line geology. He notes East Coast quakes are not due for large events, with minor quakes often felt over large areas but seldom damaging. The USGS cites no fixed fault lines east of the Rockies. Memorials dot Aiken roads as reminders of fatal crashes
Aiken residents note roadside memorials for local crash victims. Memorials for the Batchelor brothers, killed July 11, 2002, and Jerome Kelly, killed August 1998, dot Belvedere-Clearwater and Audubon Drive. Officials say signs aid drivers and inform newcomers, not eyesores.

Leatherback turtle nests on Folly Beach mark rare SC record
A leatherback turtle laid eggs at Folly Beach on July 2, the fourth nest ever recorded in South Carolina. Another nest was found June 17 on Botany Island, with earlier sites at Huntington Beach State Park in 2000 and St. Phillips Island in 1996. It is the first time in two decades of records that two SC nests warmed eggs simultaneously.
