Man charged in local murder in North Augusta

Francisco Sanchez faces a murder charge after an autopsy confirmed the death of an Hispanic man from a brain injury following a fight. The body was found at Plaza Terrace Apartments in North Augusta, no weapon was involved, and investigators are seeking next of kin information while Sanchez’s age and address remain unknown.

Tree falls on Marlboro Street home and cars

A large tree limb crashed into a Marlboro Street living room and yard neighbor vehicles, piercing the ceiling and covering a 1983 Mercedes and a 1985 Toyota Camry. Residents reported waking to a loud crash but no injuries were reported. insurance settlements will cover repairs.

Barrett seeks Thurmond Visitor Center name in Congress

South Carolina Republican Barrett introduced July 9 legislation to name the Capitol Visitor Center after late Sen. Strom Thurmond, noting his 48 years in the Senate and lifelong public service. Thurmond died at 100 on June 26. The underground center near the Capitol opens in 2005 to improve public access.

Coroner defends actions at wreck near Aiken

A Gaffney woman Edith Bishop, 65, died in a crash at Powderhouse and Whiskey Roads in Aiken Saturday. Coroner Sue Townsend defended the scene handling saying victims and bystanders were treated with respect while 11 others were treated for injuries. The Lincoln Town Car driver Ruth Thompson, 70, and two other Gaffney residents survived. seven van passengers from New Ellenton were treated and released. The crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Burglary, traffic stop, thefts in Crosland Park blotter

Police logged a July 11 burglary on Summer Avenue NE where a back door glass was broken and a DVD player valued at 50 dollars was stolen. Earlier that day a dirtbike rider fled on foot after a stop. he bought the bike for 200 dollars and knew it was stolen. Also July 10 a Walmart shopper faced shoplifting charges after concealing pills in a shoe. Officers chased, found marijuana and a pipe in a car, and a driver with a suspended license faced multiple charges. A 100-year-old revolver reported stolen years ago is suspected sold for drugs. Police seek the subject.

Greenville dentist dies in ATV crash ruled accidental

The Aiken Coroner's Office ruled Dr. David Wagner's death an accident after he crashed a four wheeler into a four foot hole on his Ridge Spring Wagener area property. Wagner, 65, died from a crushed larynx despite EMS airlift to Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. A friend on a separate ATV was uninjured.
