Plans Made For Dam Repair At Pinopolis Dam

Santee Cooper officials say a 30 inch thick steel reinforced concrete bulkhead will seal a 6 foot diameter pipe on the Lake Moultrie side of the Pinopolis Dam to permanently repair a leak that prompted evacuation of about 1500 residents last week. The timber cap on the pipe deteriorated releasing water under high pressure and raising fear of dam failure. William Mescher, president of the state utility, cited interior seal failure in the timber assembly as the cause.
