Israeli forces crossed the Jordan River and attacked a Jordanian army forward base nine miles south of the Sea of Galilee. The raid left four Jordanian soldiers dead and eight Israelis wounded as the post held as a base for Palestinian attacks near Beisan Valley.
Rep Wayne N Aspinall aged 74 of Grand Junction Colo married Essie Jeffers Best 73 widow on Sunday at Crossroads Methodist Church. The couple dated first in 1911 as schoolmates and Aspinall's first wife died in 1969 near their 50th anniversary.
Former President Charles de Gaulle completed the first volume of his memoirs covering 1958 to 1962. Plan of Paris said Le Renouveau would appear in autumn and form part of a planned three-book series documenting his years as head of state.
Comedian Jimmy Durante remained in St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica after a Thursday collapse following a Frontier Hotel Las Vegas performance. His doctor cited loss of equilibrium from an inner ear disorder and said he is recovering, with a weekend fundraising show for the Jimmy Durante Children's Fund canceled.
Police investigate arson after a series of fires caused about $10,000 damage at Jim Nabors residence in Studio City California. Nabors was away entertaining at a Lake Tahoe Nevada club when the fires broke out Saturday and no one was home.
President Nixon and Mrs. Nixon flew into Washington by helicopter after a weekend at Camp David Maryland. He conferred with aides including George P. Shultz John D Ehrlichman and H R Haldeman when not relaxing at Aspen Lodge or by the swimming pool.
Secretary of the Interior Walter J. Hickel says he has heard nothing from the President suggesting he should resign. He notes he has no plan to leave a job he believes is not finished and cites no indication Nixon wants him to walk away. Rumors had circulated about a possible resignation after a leaked letter criticizing the administration.
Sen George McGovern said the end the war amendment to pull all U S forces from Vietnam by July 1 is 10 to 12 votes short in the Senate. He expects may gain missing votes within a month while House chances remain slim. A strong Senate vote could restrain President Nixon.
Robert C. Blair was named Barnwell area representative of Allied Gulf Nuclear Services for the nuclear fuel recovery plant to be built there. He has 37 years in government service including 1955 1965 as manager of the AEC Savannah River Operations office in Aiken and prior deputy manager with the AEC in Washington Wilmington and Aiken. Blair entered the military in 1942 and worked on the Manhattan Project and helped establish the Oak Ridge facility with overseas service in New Guinea and the Philippines.
Dr. Bill D. Beckman, director of the South Carolina Rehabilitation Department, outlined national and state history of vocational rehabilitation. He noted 50th anniversary nationally and 47th in South Carolina, with funding initially limited to physically handicapped until 1943 when an amendment allowed funds for mentally handicapped vocational rehabilitation.
Aiken County marked the South Carolina Tricentennial with a downtown parade and a Revolutionary War battle reenactment. More than 40 units, led by the American Legion color guard, joined by the Army band from Ft. Gordon, featured colonial-dressed riders, floats, and a Hunley replica in the procession before the Fort Galphin battle reenactment at Battlefield Park.
Yvonne Weed of North Augusta suffered second and third degree burns over more than half her body when two pounds of black powder exploded in a salute cannon during the Aiken Tricentennial parade. She was in a rumble seat of an antique car at Park Avenue and Fairfield Street. Police attribute the blast to spontaneous combustion in the heat, as she was treated at Aiken County Hospital and reported resting comfortably.
Edgar Brown, longtime South Carolina senator and dean of the state Senate, marked his 82nd birthday with a Barnwell County parade and barbecue that drew more than 5,000 people. Governor McNair praised him as a dreamer and fighter, noting his role in championing innovation while honoring history.
Rep. L. Mendel Rivers lauded Edgar Brown for over 50 years of public service and state-building. House Speaker Sol Blatt credited Brown with the state’s sound finances while colleagues and officials including Ernest Hollings Lt. Gov. West and Judge Haynsworth attended.
Cambodian troops fight west and north of Phnom Penh while allied forces say over 400 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong killed in five days near Khe Sanh. A relief unit of US trained mercenaries clashes with 1,000 enemy at Kim Rom, 30 miles west of Phnom Penh. 530 enemy killed Sunday and Saturday.
The Aiken County Agriculture Disaster Committee asked the state to declare a disaster area due to drought. Corn crops are ruined by heat and scant rain while pastures and hay crops are at a critical point, forcing cattlemen to buy feed. The committee includes Ray Woodward James Padgett William Foxworth and James Evans. Last Thursday 39 of 46 counties reported extreme dryness.
