Aiken hosts 31 hand painted horses in public art display

Hundreds of artists submitted horse designs for a downtown display. Sponsors chose the horses and painting began. The exhibit ran until spring 2004 when the pieces were auctioned at a black tie gala with the Aiken Spring Steeplechase. About 10 to 12 remain on public display, donated for permanent public display on public property. Public art encompasses diverse forms beyond monuments and murals.

Copper caps stolen at Hopelands Gardens in Aiken

More than two dozen copper caps atop wood posts along Hopelands Gardens trails disappeared overnight between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning. Valued at 14 dollars each, the partially ornamental caps protect wooden posts and were reported to Aiken Public Safety by caretaker Jim Blalock after a City of Aiken employee noticed the theft. Gardens volunteer Bob McCa was quoted on the impact of the loss.

URS Seeks UK Contract Win for Nuclear Cleanup

URS Washington Division, once rebuffed at the Savannah River Site, now leads Nuclear Management Partners as “preferred bidder” for the Sella field nuclear cleanup in West Cumbria, United Kingdom. Consortium president Bob Pedde, ex-Savannah River Company chief, will finalize the contract with the UK Nuclear Decommissioning Authority through a forthcoming NDA process.
