Volunteer saves life at VOICE center lunch
Mike Sumerel a 53 year old VOICE volunteer at the Aiken Area Council on Aging nutrition site in Bath helped a choking woman after a steak piece became lodged in her throat. He performed the Heimlich maneuver until the piece came free and an ambulance took her away. The rescuer and the rescued woman later spoke of the close call and gratitude. Sumerel had recently retired from his job and began volunteering over a year ago to stay active.
