In today’s issue voters learn about the Republican and Democratic primaries with two governor nominees and two lieutenant governor picks in the GOP, seven governor candidates and three lieutenant governor contenders in the Democratic race, plus local races for the Third District, district House members and the Aiken County Board of Commissioners.
A survey lists Democratic and Republican primary contenders in Aiken County. GOP races include governor and lieutenant governor with other offices showing no primary. Names span Bessinger Culbertson Dorn Duke Morrisette Campbell Turnipseed Edwards Westmoreland and others across state and local posts.
Voters may choose only one primary and must sign an oath. A Republican voter cannot vote in a Democratic runoff primary. General election support for party nominees is not required. Absentee ballots are available for specific groups, with mailing delays. Voter registration closes before primaries. eligibility requires US citizenship, age 18, and registration, with felon disqualification.
A notice of appeal filed yesterday by R A Brooks H Lawson Sheppard Dr Robert O Lipe and Mildred Karraker delays the Hospital Corporation of America Certificate of Need for a new Aiken County hospital. The appeal halts issuance until a public hearing is scheduled before the South Carolina DHEC board.
Campaign violations touch three county candidates for the state House. Robert M. Bell and Marion McGowan face poster disputes in Valley intersections as Sheriff Paul Grant urges removal under a new state law. Bell says he tried to comply after being notified.
A federal grand jury indicted Ridge Spring migrant camp operator Cleveland Williams and two assistants Roosevelt Band and LeRoy Alford Jr for holding five workers in involuntary servitude from May 10 to June 14. U S District Attorney Marvin Smith calls the case unusual as both operators are Black and the victims are Black.
The June Wholesale Price Index rose five tenths of one percent led by sharp increases in industrial goods while agricultural prices fell for the fourth straight month by four percent. The rise implies an annual rate near six percent, still inflationary. Agricultural prices dropped 1.2 percent versus a year ago.
The Ehrlichman case and three co defendants enter deliberations in the Elisberg break in plot. Judge Gesell prepares jurors for verdict guidance as the trial scene moves to the District of Columbia Court of Appeals after authorities evacuate the federal courthouse due to hostages in the basement.
Nation pays last respects to retired Chief Justice Earl Warren with President Nixon and Mrs Nixon among mourners. Services set for 1 p.m. at Washington Cathedral with a rabbi and a Roman Catholic bishop delivering eulogies. Burial planned at Arlington near John Foster Dulles grave.
Frank Sinatra remained secluded in his Sydney hotel today despite a cease fire ending his three day battle with militant Australian unions. Promoters rescheduled his three canceled Sydney concerts after a three hour meeting at a plush hotel with union leader Bob Hawke who is an avowed Sinatra fan.
State highway planners met with two local committees to present traffic growth projections for Aiken in 1995 as part of the $50 000 Aiken Area Transportation Study. The meeting in City Council chambers used four charts to show future heavy travel and present deficiencies along north south routes US 19 and the western By Pass State Highway 1.
Chesley Gwinn and Kiwanis members were putting up bicycle trail signs near Whiskey Road and Easy Street when a policeman arrived, suspecting sign removal. The anecdote touched on a hypothetical headline about driver permits and a vegetable delivery ticket for expired inspection.
The Labor Department reports wholesale prices up 2.2 percent in June with metals fuels and chemicals driving about 80 percent of the rise. Farm prices fall 8.1 percent while wholesale consumer foods drop 3.8 percent though still 8.3 percent higher than a year ago.
